Munro, STETHS in Galloway Cup Final

Montego Bay, St. James: Galloway Cup Champions Munro College will contest the final with arch nemesis STETHS.

At York Castle in St. Ann, STETHS did well to beat a York Castle team that was the most prolific unit in the competition. York Castle chalked up fifteen goals in the quarterfinals with four against. It would be STETHS who would prove to be the more efficient of the two teams with a 2-0 win.

Favourites Cornwall College who lost their 100% winning record against STETHS when both teams played to a 0-0 draw on Monday, came into the game against Munro with home field advantage. The Cornwall outfit had rested a number of key players while playing against STETHS, but came into the game against Munro at full strength with the inclusion of two Dacosta Cup players and a few other senior players.

A good crowd by U16 standards gathered to watch this game of epic proportions. Cornwall would signal their intentions early when they breached the Munro defense, but national U17 representative Ahkeem Forbes pulled off a brilliant save. A battle for dominance in midfield would ensue for the remainder of the half.

The momentum swung in favour of Munro in the second half with them making several raids on the Cornwall goal. Munro won a free kick early in the second half close to the edge of the box. Mark Parchment's scorcher of a free kick eluded a sea of Munro and Cornwall players to lodge in the far corner of the goal. Munro had barely finished celebrating when Cornwall got the equalizer in less than a minute when a header from a right sided cross lobbed the Munro keeper and found the far corner of the net.

Mark "Ram" Parchment scores with a free-kick.

The remainder of the game would have ebb and flows until the dreaded penalty kicks. Munro would miss their first two penalties with excellent saves from the Cornwall keeper. Conversely, Cornwall would score their first two penalties. Munro Keeper Ahkeem Forbes would keep brilliantly from here on out, saving three of the next four penalties while getting a hand to Cornwall's fifth penalty. Ironically, Forbes would score Munro's first penalty with Stefano Hynes, Tazair Arnott, Jermaine Perry and Antonio Gregg following suit to earn Munro a 5-4 victory.

Munro and STETHS will play on Friday in the final at 3pm at STETHS.

Munro through to Semi-Finals

Green Island, Hanover- A well executed volley by Captain Derron Duncan from a corner earned defending champions Munro a 1-0 win over Green Island and a place in the Galloway Cup semi-final. Munro will advance in second place behind zone winners York Castle who spanked Manchester High 3-1.

The Munro U16 Team takes instructions from Coach Davey Thomas

Munro could have won by a wider margin but finishing proved difficult on a very bumpy surface in quite windy conditions. Munro will be stronger for the semi-final with the return of influential midfielder Mark "Ram" Parchment and the speedily diminutive forward Matthew "E.T" Kerr Clarke.

Munro's semi-final opponent will be known today when Cornwall College and STETHS settle the dispute over the best team in Group 1. This will be an intriguing match up with both teams being unbeaten in this round. STETHS are coming off a 3-0 thumping of Godfrey Stewart, while Cornwall enter this game with a 1-0 win over Decartereth College. Cornwall is the only team in this years Galloway Cup with a 100% winning record.

In U14 action Munro lost 2-1 to Green Island, ending any hope of advancing to the semi-final stage. The youngsters from Malvern felt hard done by the officials when a goal they scored resulting from a cross on the by line was deemed offside. Ricardo Pinnock scored Munro's lone goal.

Munro Junior Teams Win Easily

Malvern, St. Elizabeth- Galloway Cup champions Munro College had a signature win on Wednesday when they defeated Manning's High by a 3-0 margin.

Manning's and York Castle where on top of the group with seven points each. York Castle now lead Munro by a point when they became sole leaders in a big 5-1 thrashing of Green Island and look sure to advance to the semi-finals.

Munro signalled their intentions early when Stefano Hynes was fouled in the area. Hynes scored the penalty to put Munro ahead. Dacosta Cup player Antonio Gregg made it 2-0 when he collected a pass on the left, calmly firing the ball to the far post. Stefano Hynes would seal the issue killing off the game, finishing one time from a left sided cross.

Munro's U14 team was very impressive, smashing Godfrey Stewart 7-0. Scorers were Nicholas Collin (Hat-trick), Ricardo Pinnock, Captain Timar Lewis, Lasando Stewart, and Nicholas Aquart.

Both Munro teams will travel to Green Island today to engage that school as the competition continues.

Munro tackle Manning's in Galloway Cup

Malvern, St. Elizabeth- Munro College revived their hopes of advancing to the semi-finals of the Galloway Cup with a 1-0 win over Manchester High on Monday. Mark Parchment sealed the win for Munro.

In other Galloway Cup games, York Castle moved to the top of the group with a 3-0 thrashing of William Knibb, while Manning's edge Green Island 1-0 to stay even with York Castle on seven (7) points, but with an inferior goal average.

In U14 action Munro earned a 1-1 draw against Manchester High. Nicholas Collins scored for Munro.

Munro are gunning to overtake Manning's High in the race for one of two semi-final spots in the Galloway Cup when they meet today at Munro. Manning's have allowed just one goal while scoring four in the three quarterfinal games, and will be tough to beat, but Munro are a strong offensive unit with seven goals in three games, while allowing three goals.

The Munro U14 team must win all of their remaining games if they hope to advance. They will come up against a determined Godfrey Stewart team.

Munro to tackle Manchester in U14 and U16 Football

Mandeville, Manchester- Munro College will seek to derail Manchester High in both the U14 and U16 competitions when both schools meet at Manchester High in a double header today.

The Munro U16 team are gunning to rebound from their 3-2 loss to York Castle on Friday. Munro were leading the contest 2-1 at half time with Stefano Hynes delivering a brace. Munro faltered badly in the second half when they conceded two goals to lose 3-2. Coach Davey Thomas will hope his charges are not up to any second half lapses today as was the case in the last two games. Munro were leading 3-0 against William Knibb after one half in the game last Wednesday, but faded down the stretch though they won the game 3-1.

The Munro U14 team will hope to build on their emphatic 9-2 win over Ocho Rios when they come up against Manchester at 1:45 this afternoon.

Munro Dacosta Cup Interzone Round Up

Malvern, St. Elizabeth-

November 2, 2011 Manchester High vs Munro

Both teams started quickly in an effort to take the lead, but it was Manchester who began to impose themselves on Munro. Apart from a few sporadic attacks, Munro never appeared to be in the game offensively.

Manchester midfielder Vincent Mitchell weaved his way past three Munro players to score with a shot to the upper right hand corner of the goal. Munro nearly equalised when Ryan Dwyer's excellently taken free-kick was deflected by the Manchester wall, barely missing the upright.

The second half was dominated by Manchester, and it would be Vincent Mitchell who doubled the score when he pounced on a loose ball after Munro Keeper Akeem Forbes saved a header from point blank ranged. Manchester cruised to a 2-0 victory.

November 5, 2011 Munro vs Lennon

In a grudge match at the STETHS Sports Complex, Munro was determined to reverse the embarrassing 5-1 defeat to Lennon High they suffered last season.

Munro had a better game than the Manchester game but could not find the net. Goalkeeper Akeem Forbes came up big on a few occasions to keep Munro in the game.

In the second half Munro had a slight edge in ball possession, and narrowly missed scoring on two occasions with Ryan Dwyer's ferocious shots just going wide. The game would end 0-0.

November 9, 2011 Grange Hill vs Munro

Munro scored their first and only goal from the penalty spot of this round with Amin Miller scoring.

Grange Hill would even the score when a corner eluded the Munro defense with Orvest Hewling sliding in at the far post to equalize. Munro problems escalated when right back Cleus Benjamin missed a clearance with his right foot; Daryl Daley collected the loose ball and fired powerfully past Akeem Forbes.

Grange Hill would score two more goals to win 4-1, their biggest win since defeating first round minnows Little London High and Maud McCleod High.

It was a disheartening season for the former champions Munro College, as they were only able to manage a point in the inter-zone round.

Munro lose to STETHS

Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth- A brilliant four pass combination to the prolific Kevon Farquarson who expertly fired to the right of National U17 invitee goalkeeper Akeem Forbes, gave Ben Francis Champions STETHS a 1-0 victory and a berth into the inter-zone round.

STETHS dominated a Munro team that rarely went on the attack. Munro centre forward Shaunuvan Desouza's made an effective run down the left, with his cross just missing the head of his strike partner Amin Miller midway the second half. Left midfielder Ryan Dyer would see his powerful shot blocked by the STETHS defense.

Munro goalkeeper Akeem Forbes had an excellent game holding on firmly to powerful shots in wet conditions.

Interzone Round Beckons for Munro and STETHS

Malvern, St. Elizabeth- Many time Champions Munro will seek to become early qualifiers for the interzone round when they go in search of a win at STETHS on Saturday. Munro are coming off a 4-0 whipping of Newell High yesterday. Striker Amin "Chiller" Miller scored a hat-trick, along with Kaniel Harrison's penalty. Munro are now tied with STETHS on twenty two (22) points.

A win for Munro or STETHS would lift them to twenty five (25) points and automatic qualification. Black River High who lost 2-1 to Lacovia at home yesterday with twelve (12) points are closest to Munro and STETHS in the points standings. With four matches remaining it would take nothing short of a miracle for Black River to qualify for the next round. Black River would have to win all their remaining games to get to twenty four (24) points, with Munro or STETHS having to lose all their remaining games in order to facilitate the unlikely qualification of Black River.

The Munro, STETHS game on Saturday has all the making of a classic. When the two met in September, it was on the bumpy Munro Sports Complex Field. This time around the surface at the STETHS Sports Complex will allow for much better football. Both teams are highly motivated, and losing is not an option for either.

Pryce to the Rescue, Munro hunts win against Lacovia

Malvern, St. Elizabeth- Westmoreland native Lenworth "Pinchazz" Pryce scored arguably the most spectacular goal this season, when he drew his team level against Zone leaders STETHS with a sizzler of a bicycle kick.
Lenworth Pryce in conversation with the Media

Both teams played out a forgettable first half as they struggled to find their rhythm on a bumpy pitch. The second half would produce more excitement.

STETHS would go ahead in the 75th minute when a Munro defender handled the ball. Kevon Farqueson gave Munro goalkeeper Akeem Forbes little chance, blasting the ball to the right of Forbes.

Kevon Farqueson Converts Penalty for STETHS

Desperate to salvage the game Munro coach Alric Clarke, soon replace Kaniel Harrison, and Neon Brown with Ryan Dwyer and Lenworth Pryce. Shaunuvan Desouza who looked off colour at centre forward moved to the flank; a move which paid dividends. Munro came to life offensively with these adjustments and began making raids at the STEHTS goal.

Desouza collected a pass on the right and skipped by two defenders, fainted the shot before laying off the cross to Pryce who was unmarked in the box. Pryce calmly controlled the ball on his chest then leaped into the air, riffling the ball with an acrobatic volley into the goal, earning Munro an 88th minute equaliser. Pryce's strike was so sublime it brought cheers from Munro and STETHS supporters alike. Many struggled to conjure up a goal equal to the one Pryce score in recent memory.

With this 1-1 draw Munro are third with ten (10), and STETHS lead with sixteen(16) points. In other games, Black River beat Newell 5-1 to move to second on twelve (12) points, while Balaclava upstaged Lacovia 2-1.

Munro delayed, STETHS Lead Zone

Malvern, St. Elizabeth- Many time champions Munro College had their probable return to winning ways derailed for the time being when their game against Lacovia was halted at the quarter hour mark due to inclement weather.

The game had barely started when Lacovia drew first blood from a free-kick which rebounded off the Munro wall and into the goal. Munro responded shortly after, when Montego Bay United player Shaunuvan Desouza who is returning from injury equalized for the former champions.

In other games, Ben Francis Champions STETHS recorded the biggest win of the day when they mauled Newell 17-0 to lead the group on nine (9) points. Decartereth College moved into second spot when they upset Black River 2-0.

The competition resumes in Zone F on Tuesday when STETHS take on Black River away, Newell opposes Balaclava, and Decartereth face Lacovia.

Munro stunned by Black River

Black River, St. Elizabeth- Munro College were shocked by Black River when they were beaten 2-0 in their critical Zone F clash.

Black River opened the scoring early in the first half when their striker got behind the Munro defense, forcing Munro keeper Tevin Tomlinson off his line. Tomlinson brought down the Black River centre forward, and a penalty was awarded. Black River Captain Keno Mullings stepped up to convert the penalty kick.

Munro fought hard to find the equaliser, and could have got it when striker Amin"Chiller" Miller shot just wide of the far post. The first half however belong to Black River.

Munro dominated the second half, pinning Black Ricer in their own half. Amin Miller collected a pass from the right, speeding past the Black River defense, but his shot barely went over the cross bar. The diminutive Neon Brown had the Black River goalkeeper at his mercy, but shot wide of the post. Munro best chance of the game came when Kevon Howard swung the ball diagonally from the right unto the chest of Amin Miller inside the box, but Miller fumbled with the goalkeeper at his mercy.

Black River sealed the game when they won a free kick at the edge of the box. The ball was stealthily rolled unto the feet of Luciel Banton who fired past Tevin Tomlinson in goal.

Ben Francis Champions STETHS moved to six points in the group when they hammered Balaclava 5-0 at Appleton Estate. National U20 striker Kevon Farquharson scored twice for STETHS to take his season tally to five goals. Decartereth College moved to four points in the group when they beat Newell 4-2.

Munro will look to rebound when they face bottom placed Lacovia on Saturday at home.

Munro poised for Black River

Malvern, St. Elizabeth- Munro College's Dacosta Cup campaign gained momentum when they romped Newell High 5-0, eclipsing STETHS (idle today) as zone leaders. Lead by a hat-trick from Amin "Chiller" Miller, and a goal a piece from Captain and National U17 invitee Kaniel Harrison, and another from Ryan "Blacka Shine" Dwyer, Munro appeared a more fluid unit than the one that clipped Balaclava 2-1.

Miller who was on suspension, and missed Munro first game against Balaclava, could have easily doubled his tally of goals. The multi-talented Miller has the potential to be one of the best strikers in the Dacosta Cup this season given proper focus and discipline.

Mean while, Black River High battered Lacovia High 4-1, and Decartereth College drew 2-2 with Balaclava.

Munro has an intriguing match-up with Black River this Wednesday at Black River High. This game promises a lot of fire works and should be worth travelling many miles to see. Both these teams have had memorable battles with each other in the junior ranks when Munro won the U14, and two years later the U16. Munro got the better of Black River by a 1-0 margin when they played in the U14 competition, but lost to them 2-1 in a practice game January 2008 when Munro prepared to play Kingston College in the all island U14. Black River proved to be one of  Munro's toughest foes in the 2009 Galloway Cup U16 competition , when the teams played out a 0-0 draw. Their is an additional twist to this match-up, in that one of Black River's top midfielders Kevon Howard, the brother of former Munro Dacosta Cup player Kemar Howard has opted to play for Munro.

With the zone appearing to have only three formidable teams in Dacosta Cup favourites STETHS, many time champions Munro, and the tenacious Black River, a win for Munro away on Wednesday will put them in the drivers seat ahead of  STETHS' challenge of Black River next week Tuesday.
