Munro stunned by Black River

Black River, St. Elizabeth- Munro College were shocked by Black River when they were beaten 2-0 in their critical Zone F clash.

Black River opened the scoring early in the first half when their striker got behind the Munro defense, forcing Munro keeper Tevin Tomlinson off his line. Tomlinson brought down the Black River centre forward, and a penalty was awarded. Black River Captain Keno Mullings stepped up to convert the penalty kick.

Munro fought hard to find the equaliser, and could have got it when striker Amin"Chiller" Miller shot just wide of the far post. The first half however belong to Black River.

Munro dominated the second half, pinning Black Ricer in their own half. Amin Miller collected a pass from the right, speeding past the Black River defense, but his shot barely went over the cross bar. The diminutive Neon Brown had the Black River goalkeeper at his mercy, but shot wide of the post. Munro best chance of the game came when Kevon Howard swung the ball diagonally from the right unto the chest of Amin Miller inside the box, but Miller fumbled with the goalkeeper at his mercy.

Black River sealed the game when they won a free kick at the edge of the box. The ball was stealthily rolled unto the feet of Luciel Banton who fired past Tevin Tomlinson in goal.

Ben Francis Champions STETHS moved to six points in the group when they hammered Balaclava 5-0 at Appleton Estate. National U20 striker Kevon Farquharson scored twice for STETHS to take his season tally to five goals. Decartereth College moved to four points in the group when they beat Newell 4-2.

Munro will look to rebound when they face bottom placed Lacovia on Saturday at home.

Munro poised for Black River

Malvern, St. Elizabeth- Munro College's Dacosta Cup campaign gained momentum when they romped Newell High 5-0, eclipsing STETHS (idle today) as zone leaders. Lead by a hat-trick from Amin "Chiller" Miller, and a goal a piece from Captain and National U17 invitee Kaniel Harrison, and another from Ryan "Blacka Shine" Dwyer, Munro appeared a more fluid unit than the one that clipped Balaclava 2-1.

Miller who was on suspension, and missed Munro first game against Balaclava, could have easily doubled his tally of goals. The multi-talented Miller has the potential to be one of the best strikers in the Dacosta Cup this season given proper focus and discipline.

Mean while, Black River High battered Lacovia High 4-1, and Decartereth College drew 2-2 with Balaclava.

Munro has an intriguing match-up with Black River this Wednesday at Black River High. This game promises a lot of fire works and should be worth travelling many miles to see. Both these teams have had memorable battles with each other in the junior ranks when Munro won the U14, and two years later the U16. Munro got the better of Black River by a 1-0 margin when they played in the U14 competition, but lost to them 2-1 in a practice game January 2008 when Munro prepared to play Kingston College in the all island U14. Black River proved to be one of  Munro's toughest foes in the 2009 Galloway Cup U16 competition , when the teams played out a 0-0 draw. Their is an additional twist to this match-up, in that one of Black River's top midfielders Kevon Howard, the brother of former Munro Dacosta Cup player Kemar Howard has opted to play for Munro.

With the zone appearing to have only three formidable teams in Dacosta Cup favourites STETHS, many time champions Munro, and the tenacious Black River, a win for Munro away on Wednesday will put them in the drivers seat ahead of  STETHS' challenge of Black River next week Tuesday.

Munro clip Balaclava 2-1

Appleton, St. Elizabeth- Munro College got off to a winning start in the 2011 Dacosta Cup when Ryan Dwyer, and Neon Brown steered them to a 2-1 win.

At the STETHS Sports Complex, Munro's arch nemisis STETHS lead by a hat-trick from Kevon "Kingfish" Farqueson ran over Decartereth College 5-0.

Munro will look to fine tune their skills when they take on Newell High on monday, while their other zonal rival Black River High will play away to Lacovia.

Munro College Dacosta Cup Pre-Season Round-Up

Malvern, St. Elizabeth- Many time Champions Munro College will commence the 2011 Dacosta Cup competitions with high hopes of annexing the coveted trophy. Optimism is high in the Munro camp, and justifiably so; new Coach Alric Clarke has three Manning Cups, one Walker Cup, and two Olivier Shields under his belt, along with the addition of six new players from various schools to compliment the two that came last year.

The results in the pre-season have been mixed, but Munro has seldom used their most effective team. Here is a summary of the pre-season games:

Munro dethroned by St. Thomas Technical

Brook's Park, Manchester- Munro College came up short in their bid to retain the Western Champs Trophy, when they were edged 1-0 by St. Thomas Technical.

In a game which saw both teams seeking to get the ascendancy in midfield, Munro got two early chances to snatch the lead. The first coming when Jermaine Perry sneaked in from the left, but saw his shot just wide of the post. The easiest chance, however, fell to Levar Dunchie who outpaced the St. Thomas defense, but dribbled away from the goal with the goalkeeper at his mercy.

St. Thomas began to settle, and won a free kick just outside the box. Danger man Romaine Jennings curl the free kick around the Munro wall, but Ahkeem Forbes was equal to the task, diving to his left to catching the ball in flight.

With the game seemingly heading to a stalemate, St. Thomas made a run down the Munro left side, crossing the ball to the penalty spot, to an unmarked player who controlled on the chest, rocketing it into the Munro goal with eight minutes remaining.

The team represented Munro with distinction. We wish to acknowledge three influential players who were not able to play beyond the quarter-finals stage. Dacosta Cup reserve Antonio Gregg , original Captain Oshane "Mudfish" Black, and defensive midfielder Jordan Lawson were all willing, but not able to complete the season.

We would like to thank coach Davey Thomas for his dedication, and his open minded approach in coaching the team; I have been privileged to be in dialogue with him through out the season with insight on all the opponents we opposed in the quarter-finals and beyond. Special mention must be made of coach Rafael Craig Butler of the Phoenix Football Academy who has done instrumental work with Ahkeem Forbes, Levar Dunchie, Oshane Black, Nickoi Sinclair and Derron Duncan. Special thanks to our outgoing Head Master Branford Gail, the Munro College Sports Department, the Kitchen Staff, and all our drivers who carried our team safely to the games.

Munro are Galloway Cup Champions Again

Levar Dunchie receives the Galloway Cup while the rest of the Munro College U16 team looks on.

Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth- Munro College retained the Galloway Cup after beating Green Pond High 4-2 on penalties.

Munro came at Green Pond determined to break their scoring drought. Nykoui Sinclair cannoned a shot on goal that the Green Pond goalkeeper failed to hold unto, spilling the ball into the path of the onrushing Tyrone Mollison who calmly tapped it over the goal line.

Munro became a little complacent late in the first half and were made to pay for their deeds. Green Pond, a team steeped in the art of set plays, won a corner. I well struck ball flew through the crowd of players onto the head of a Green Pond player who headed it into the goal.

Munro came out in the second half with greater purpose, and looked a more dangerous offensive unit with the inclusion of Mark "Ram" Parchment, and 2009 Maths Competition winner Horace Mcloud who made a noticeable difference with well calculated passes from the midfield. These changes nearly reaped dividends in regulation time, when Captain Levar Dunchie dribbled his way through the heart of the Green Pond defense, but saw his shot just wide of the post with a minute from time.

Munro got what looked like the winner when Dunchie carried the ball pasted two defenders to slide the ball around the Green Pond Goalkeeper. Green Pond were undaunted however, and scored with two minutes left when Jerome "Machine" Haughton dribbled the ball from an indirect free kick into the Munro area, beating Ahkeem Forbes, with Ria Sanga failing to clear the ball out of the area, an onrushing Green Pond player tapped the ball into the goal.

Munro were perfect from the penalty spot this time with Ria Sanga, Rayon Williams, Ahkeem Forbes, and Mark Parchment scoring from the spot. Green Pond weren't as fortunate, scoring their first two penalties, managing to kicked one wide, with the Munro Goalkeeper Ahkeem Forbes saving another.

The STETHS Sports Complex erupted in jubilation after Mark "Ram" Parchment's conclusive penalty hit the net with a thud. Munro appears to have peaked at the right time, and are resolute in their campaign to retain the Western Champs Trophy when they take on the Abner Wright winners St. Thomas Technical in that final this Tuesday at 3pm, with the likely venue to be STETHS.

In the curtain raiser, the Munro College U14 team surrendered a 1-0  lead to lose 2-1 in extra time to the defending champions Cornwall College. Javane "Stew Peas" Stewart gave Munro the lead from the penalty spot. Peter Lee Vassell, the cousin of Munro midfielder Shaunavan Desouza , scored the winning goal for Cornwall.

Munro to Challenge for U14 and U16 Titles

Mandeville, Manchester- Munro College, will seek to retain the Galloway Cup that they won in 2009, when they take on Green Pond High in the final. Munro beating the much touted Manchester High 3-2 on penalties in a pulsating semifinals at Brook's Park on Tuesday evening. While Green Pond were winners over Cornwall College on penalties after a 0-0 scoreline.

National U17 Goalkeeper Ahkeem Forbes, and Stephano Hynes would prove to be the heroes on the day after a torrid regulation and extra time game.

Munro signalled their intentions early when Nickoui Sinclair hit the post from a long range shot. Both teams traded attacks through out the game, but finding the net proved to be elusive. Manchester were kept at bay by the resolute defense of Derron Duncan, Cameron Bell, Brian Patterson, and Ryan Williams.

Munro had two opportunities toward the end of play. Levar Dunchie collected a pass and ran by the Manchester defense, but the Manchester goalkeeper came off his line in a flash to block. The other fell to Nickoui Sinclair who found himself in a goal scoring position on the right, but fired wide of the target.

The game came down to penalty kicks, with both teams failing to score a considerable number of penalties. Munro Keeper, Ahkeem Forbes missed the first Munro penalty, but held his nerve to save four Manchester penalties. Sudden death penalties would decide the outcome. On Coach Davey Thomas' directions, extra time substitute Stephano Hynes walked up to the penalty spot. The cool and composed Hynes struck the ball high and wide of the Manchester keeper, leaving him no chance. Loud cheers and wild celebrations erupted from the Munro faithful, they had once again vanquished Manchester.

The Munro U14 team had to work hard for their 1-0 victory over Green Island. Third former Brandon Drummond secured the win with two minutes left in regulation time. Munro will now seek to unseat U14 Champions Cornwall College who spanked Ruseas High 4-0 en route to the finals.
