Munro College Takes WFAU17 Title

Frome, Westmoreland- Munro College emerged victors over Frome FC with a 3-1 win on penalties after an extra time 0-0 scoreline.

Munro playing without centre forward Krishem Black, right winger Errol Davis and goalkeeper Lloyd Tyme were undeterred by the slippery underfoot conditions and the hostile crowd.

In a game full with ebbs and flows, Munro had the better chances, and were unlucky to have ended the half 0-0.

In the second half Munro central midfielder Carl Simpson dribbled through the heart of the Frome FC defence hitting the crossbar with a torrid shot.

Frome would have their moments as well, when a diagonal pass went behind the Munro defenders, but the shot went over the crossbar.

With regulation time now up and Frome looking to survive, Munro attacked with a vengeance. Munro looked to have the winner when midfielder Akeem Brown fired a well placed shot through the crowded Frome 18 yard box, but the ball was cleared off the line by a resolute Frome defender.

With penalties to decide the game Munro reserve goalie Tevin Tomlinson came up big. Tomlinson saved two penalties in a row to put Frome on the back foot, while the Munro trio of Captain Xavier Hendricks, Carl Simpson, and Akeem Brown all scored. With Frome needing to score their fourth penalty to stay alive, tensions were high in the Munro camp.

Frome striker Alvin Blair walked up to the ball nervously, with his penalty hitting the post in the process, the Munro camp erupted in wild celebration with the 3-1 win.

The would be the second football competition Munro has won in 2 years, having won the U14 in 2007.

We would like to thank our Headmaster Mr. Gail, and all representatives of the Westmoreland Football Association for allowing the boys to take part in such a competition outside of the regular schoolboy season. Special thanks to Coach Hopeton Gilchrist, the driver Mr. Peter Morris, Ms. Opal Vassel, Mr. Keith Bell, and all the boys who made the sacrifice to play for Munro College. We are now as it would seem, on the road to the Dacosta Cup.
