Munro in WFA17 FINAL

Demari Stephens (Second from left) scores the opening goal with a well placed header.

Frome, Westmoreland- Munro College pressed their way into the final of the WFAU17 with a 2-1 win on penalties against Dunbars River FC.

Munro dominated through out, but found goals elusive. These difficulties were compounded by match officials, who failed to make calls against Dunbars River when infractions were committed on three separate occasions inside the area.

Striker Demari Stephens who had his best game yet opened the scoring for Munro with a header in the first several minutes of play.

Dunbars River FC who finished second to Reno FC in the other group were not content to roll over and die. With a pass that appeared offside, Dunbars River strikers raced toward goal forcing Munro goalie Lloyd Tyme to intercept, the subsequent rebound was converted and the score became 1-1. Despite bitter protest from the Munro camp, the controversial goal was allowed.

Munro were undaunted by the circumstances, and battered Dunbars River from pillar to post. Striker Demari Stephens got the easiest chance of the game, when Akeem Brown's cross eluded two defenders, but Stephens fired over the bar from close range.

The other striker Krishem Black made what looked like a match winning run, when he came down the left, cut inside, but the Dunbars River goalie made the save of the game to keep the score even.

With time expired, the match came down to penalties. Munro custodian Lloyd Tyme would be the hero, making 2 saves that would earn Munro College the 2-1 victory on penalties.

In the other semi-final Frome FC defeated Reno FC 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 regulation scoreline.

The final will take place between Frome FC and Munro College at 3:00pm at the Frome Sports Ground on Saturday May 16,2009.
